This book is the ninth in the Vera Stanhope series and is the first one I have read. The plot is a clever police procedural.Vera makes a wrong turn on the way home in the Northumbria district on a snowy night. She finds an abandoned car with a baby alone inside. Upon searching the area, she stumbles on the dead body of a young woman. Seeking shelter and a working phone, she realizes that the nearest refuge is at the home of an estranged branch of her family. This plot exposition at the outset of the book provides the framework for the procedural to unfold. The pace of the book is reasonably engaging and the resolution is satisfying. The book has elements of a cozy mystery because it is set in a small taciturn community with Vera’s estranged relatives, the fading landed gentry, at the center of the puzzle. The isolated physical setting adds an element of intrigue and, occasionally menace. Additionally, the characterization of Vera and her team is extremely well drawn. I will be reading earlier entries in this series. I probably missed some clues, none the less, I was glued to this one from the get go! I was wound up in a superb mystery and it was a great relief . I've had a crap summer. Diving into Vera's world almost made me think it's not 95 degrees.
